After apartheid’s fall in 1991 ANC party started a RDP housing program (Reconstruction and Development Programme). People earning less than R3,500 among other qualifications could join the program and get put on a list in wait for a house.

May 8, 2017 the communities around Johannesburg had enough. Protests started off in Eldorado Park, and soon after Finetown, Ennerdale, Orangefarm and a few more followed. Demonstrators closed off roads, threw rocks and stones as the police tried to disperse the crowds with rubber bullets and tear gas.
